FAQ For Treating Hand Veins
Q. What are hand veins? A. Hand veins refer to the surface veins that are visible on the top of your hand. As we age there is a natural thinning that takes place on your skin. Because of this hand veins become more visible as we age. Q. What causes unsightly hand veins? A. In most cases, unsightly hand veins are healthy and not diseased, as in the case of varicose veins in the leg. The most typical cause of unwanted hand veins is the thinning of skin and subcutaneous tissue that comes with age. Without that youthful cushioning, the veins begin to appear more obvious and bulge. Q. Why remove hand veins? A. The removal of hand veins is purely a cosmetic procedure. The saying goes, you can always tell a woman’s true age not by looking at her face, but at her hands. Removing unsightly, bulging hand veins benefits those wishing to regain that soft, youthful appearance. It restores confidence in women who have developed unattractive veins on their hands and have become self-conscious. The endovenous laser treatment yields minimal discomfort and boasts a high success rate. It is a quick procedure with an equally rapid recovery time. Q. Does insurance cover the cost of the procedure? A. Because the removal of hand veins is considered a cosmetic procedure, it is not normally covered by insurance companies. Q. Is the laser procedure painful? A. Most patients report little to no pain during the procedure. Local anesthesia is used to minimize any discomfort while treating the hand veins. Q. Will the blood circulation in the hand be compromised if unsightly veins are removed? A. There are many more blood vessels in the deeper layers of the hand that provide adequate blood flow. The bulging hand veins are superficial and not required for normal circulation. Q. What are the side effects and/or risks of treating my hand veins? A. Generally the discomfort associated with the hand vein procedure is minimal. There might be slight bruising, swelling, and/or pain that is usually resolved quickly. Q. How are hand veins treated? A. Dr. Fox offers endovenous laser ablation as well as sclerotherapy and micro-phlebectomy for the treatment of unwanted hand veins. For patients electing laser as the primary treatment, sclerotherapy and/or micro-phlebectomy are used to treat smaller "crossing veins" in order to obtain an optimal cosmetic result. Please refer to the section on this page for details on the various treatment options. Q. Will my insurance pay for my initial hand vein consultation? A. There is an initial office visit charge for your hand veins consultation with the surgeon. The cost of this consultation will generally be covered by insurance. If insurance does not cover your consultation with Dr. Fox, then the cost of the consultation will be deducted from the cost of the procedure. Q. What is the cost for hand vein treatment? A. The fee for treatment of unwanted hand veins is $3,000 per hand. This includes all follow-up visits and "touch-up" treatments for three months. Q. How long does the hand vein treatment last? A. The results from the hand vein treatment are permanent. Unlike varicose veins in the leg, unwanted hand veins are not abnormal veins, thus the likelihood of new veins developing in your hands is very low. Q. How long has Dr. Fox been treating vein disorders? A. Over fifteen years. As a Board-Certified Vascular Surgeon he is able to treat a wide range of venous diseases from the simple to the most complex. Q. Are 'touch-up' hand vein treatments available following my treatment?
A. Yes. Fox Vein Care provides free of charge “touch-up†hand vein treatments for one full year following your initial treatment.
Q, How do I get started?

New Therapies For Treating Unwanted Hand Veins
If you are suffering from unsightly hand veins we can help. Fox Vein Care offers several therapies to eliminate large bulging hand veins. Details on the three therapies available to treat your hand veins are provided below: Treatment using Endovenous laser as the primary treatment.
Endovenous laser treatment involves using a small laser fiber, which is threaded into the large unwanted vein through a very small needle hole in the skin. As the fiber is slowly withdrawn, the heat from the laser seals off the vein. Blood flow is naturally redirected towards other veins, and the collapsed vein will eventually be absorbed by the body. This procedure is performed under local anesthesia. A compression bandage is worn immediately following the procedure, but normal movement is not restricted. Any veins that are still visible after endovenous laser treatment can be treated with micro-phlebectomy or sclerotherapy to obtain optimal cosmetic results.
Treatment using Micro-Phlebectomy.
Micro-Phlebectomy is the process of removing unwanted veins through tiny incisions made with a very fine scalpel, the same kind as is used in opthalmologic surgery. This procedure is performed using local anesthesia and generally requires no stitches since the incisions are so small. Therefore, it results in little or no scarring. Treatment using Foam sclerotherapy.
Veins that are treated with foam sclerotherapy are injected with a sclerosant solution. The solution displaces blood from the vein and induces a healing response resulting in closure of the vein. The procedure is performed with local anesthesia to minimize patient discomfort. A compression bandage is worn following the procedure.
